The Kiwanis Club of Point Loma was chartered on August 24th, 1950 with 46 members. The first meeting was held at the Merlin Inn. The first President was Harold F. Green. First year activities included sponsorship of the Easter Sunrise Service at the Cabrillo National Monument. We have sponsored an Easter Sunrise Service every year since. In the past, the Club sponsored Boy Scout Troop 36, which participates in a boating excursion to view the annual migration of the whales in the winter seas off Point Loma. This is an immensely popular activity. The first excursion boat was Old Ironsides a charter boat operated by club member Chuck Chamberlin. Recently the clubs major projects include the ever-popular Easter Sunrise Service, Meals on Wheels, a Share the Food Distribution Site, an Annual Rummage Sale, and the Pancake Breakfast held every year. The club also supports programs for the Children's Hospital such as the Miracle Mile of Quarters. We support the local JROTC at Point Loma High School and provide scholarships to graduating High School Seniors. The younger children receive Hope of America Awards in a ceremony when the graduate Elementary School. Don Robinson, a Charter Member, is still active with the club. |
